Fr. Frederick C. Ludwig, a native of Wolfenbuettel, Germany,  was a convert from Protestantism. He was born in 1823 and studied at the seminaries of Saint Sulpice, in Paris, and St. Mary's, in Cleveland, before being ordained in 1864. Fr. Ludwig was considered a fine musician and linguist, but his carreer was marred by a long struggle with mental illness. He died in 1889.
